Institute of Legacy Management

The Institute of Legacy Management (ILM) is a not-for-profit membership organisation offering specialised training and support to legacy professionals within the charity and not-for-profit sector across the UK. Together, its members are responsible for managing more than £3bn of legacy income every year, ensuring that the last wishes of an individual are fulfilled as they intended in their will.

ILM has 700 members working in around 500 charities – both large and small – as well as members from not-for-profit organisations and associated professions. Many are former private client practitioners, bringing with them a great deal of experience within the legal profession.

The ILM’s overall remit is to promote best practice and ensure that every donor’s charitable legacy reaches its intended beneficiary. To help achieve this goal, ILM provides training courses, mentoring, access to a knowledge bank of experts and a comprehensive support network. Alongside its work with members, the ILM holds regular dialogue with other stakeholders, including the Law Commission and HMCTS, to ensure member views are put forward on topical issues and legislative changes.
